Dahlia Season in the Bay Area

Filoli Historic House & Gardens

Dahlia season is here, and here in the Bay Area, September is prime time for dahlias. If you’ve walked through gardens around the Bay Area, dahlias are putting on their yearly show.

Dahlia season is a favorite time of year for flower lovers. Locally grown dahlias are where seasonality and sustainability meet. Dahlias are seasonal flowers and bruise easily, which means they do not ship well. Sourcing locally means a lower environmental footprint and no long-haul refrigerated shipping. Locally grown dahlias are fresher and will last longer in arrangements due to less time in transit. Dahlias grown in the Bay Area produce color you simply can’t get from imported stems. Dahlias come in all colors of the rainbow and in different shapes and sizes.
