How to choose a color palette for your special event
Color is important because it sets the vibe and overall mood for your special event as well as it creates a memorable experience for your guests. Choosing a color palette for your special event can be daunting if you have no idea where to begin. Aim to choose a minimum of 3 colors, a dominant color, an accent color, and a neutral color. Here are some ideas to consider when choosing a color palette for your special event.
Start with the mood you want to create.
Good vibes only
If you want to create energy and excitement then you want to consider bright colors such as yellows, oranges, reds and hot pinks. If a dreamy and gentle vibe is what you’re after then consider blush, peach, lavender, and pastel pink. These colors will create a soft and romantic vibe. If sophistication is your vibe then consider whites, creams, and greens to create an elegant and chic vibe. If high energy is your vibe then consider bold hues like magenta, coral, and deep purples
2. Consider the venue.
The venue plays an important role in choosing a color palette. Considerations must be made for the wall color, flooring and or lighting to ensure the colors don’t clash and will complement the venue.
3. Consider the event theme and season.

Colors can be matched to an event’s theme. For example baby showers traditionally opt for the standard blue or pink color scheme however you don’t have to. Alternatively, couples are choosing non-standard colors like purples or yellows. Be open to think outside the box.
The time of year can provide color inspiration for your event color palette. Seasonal colors vary by time of year. Spring events often feature soft, fresh hues such as soft pink, lavender, sage green, butter yellow and sky blue. Summer celebrations tend to embrace brighter and more vibrant colors like coral, turquoise, sunflower yellow, red, and fuchsia. Fall is known for rich and warm tones like orange, burgundy, mustard and deep green. Winter events often incorporate elegant shades like emerald, navy, plum, silver, icy blue and classic white.
4. Use a color wheel as a guide or visit a paint store.
Color Swatches
A color wheel is a valuable tool for creating a cohesive color palette. It can guide you on what color combinations naturally work well together and help you understand how colors relate to each other. For example complementary colors are opposite to each other on the color wheel which creates a bold look and eye-catching contrast like navy and orange. Analogous colors are colors next to each other and this creates a softer, more harmonious look like blush, mauve and dusty rose. Monochromatic palettes are different shades of the same color and this can create a subtle impact. A color wheel can help you narrow down options and create a balanced color palette.
Another great option is visiting a local paint store. Paint retailers often display professionally curated color collections that coordinate beautifully together. Take home a few sample color swatches and compare them to your venue, decor, and stationery to see how they work together.
Keep in mind some colors are harder or more expensive to source in florals. For example the color blue was a difficult color to find in florals but nowadays we are seeing a lot more options in this colorway.
Choosing the right event color palette is all about creating a vibe that feels unique. The right colors will tie everything together, complement your venue, set the mood, and help create a memorable experience for your guests. Whether you’re planning a wedding, corporate event, birthday party or special gathering, a little thought and creativity go a long way when it comes to selecting your color palette. Have fun with color and the process. Trust your instincts. The best events are the ones that feel personal, welcoming and true to your vision.
